4 tips for riding safely on your motorcycle

With summer just around the corner, it's best to understand how to stay safe when you take out your motorcycle. Riding a motorcycle is potentially dangerous, and if a driver doesn't see you or stop in time, you could end up in a serious or fatal collision.

To keep yourself safer, you need to be defensive. How can you keep yourself safe, though, when other people aren't being safe themselves? Here are a few tips.

1. Drive only when you're alert

Driving when you're drowsy or distracted is a recipe for disaster. Do what you can to make sure you're focused and attentive when you're on the road, so you don't end up facing injury due to a crash. It's up to you to watch out for other drivers who aren't paying attention.

2. Check your mirrors

Even if it seems quiet behind you or you're stopped at a red light, you need to keep checking your mirrors. Noticing a dangerous driver behind you gives you a chance to get out of the way.

3. Keep your distance

Even though traffic might be tight, it's in your best interests to keep a distance between yourself and others. If they sneak up on you, speed up or allow them to pass, so you don't have someone riding too closely to your tail end.

4. Learn emergency braking techniques

If you have to brake suddenly, you don't want to lose control. Be safe by taking a course and learning to brake in a variety of situations.

With these tips, it's easier to stay safe. Remember, if you're hit, you can make a claim against the driver.
