Were you involved in a car vs. pedestrian accident?

There is never a good time for drivers to take their eyes off of the road. If you share the roadways with cars, always pay attention to what's going on around you, as this helps minimize the chance of being involved in an accident.

The car always wins

A driver's negligence can lead to serious injuries, even a death, of any walking, running or otherwise hanging out near a road. As a pedestrian, stay aware of your surroundings at all times, and assume that some drivers won't be paying any attention to what's going on around them. While you may be able to help prevent an accident, it's no guarantee.

Here are some of the many factors that can cause a vehicle-pedestrian accident:

  • Speeding and other forms of reckless driving
  • Distracted driving, such as sending a text message
  • Failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk
  • Failing to signal before making a turn
  • Ignoring traffic signals or signs
  • Ignoring traffic conditions or weather conditions, such as heavy rain
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (including prescription drugs)

What should I do if I am hit by a car?

If you are ever struck by a motor vehicle, do not attempt to move. Stay where you are until police and an ambulance arrive. Often, the seriousness of an accident victim's injuries are not noticed until later because of shock. If you are able, take note of witnesses and accident details, and pass along the information to law enforcement.

After you have seen a medical professional, learn about your legal options. If the driver acted in a negligent manner, you may find yourself in position to seek compensation for your injuries and other losses.
