Winter driving tips for the long haul

Whether you're driving long-distance to visit family friends this winter, or simply driving for business, you should keep your eyes on the very real dangers that winter driving entails. Indeed, different parts of the United States are more dangerous than others, so it's important to be prepared -- and well-armed -- with a few long-distance winter driving safety tips to keep you and your family safe this holiday season.

If you're getting on the interstate for a long trip this winter, here's what you should keep in mind:

  • Monitor weather reports carefully. If there is a big snowstorm or ice storm hitting an area you plan to drive through, you might want to re-route your path, or stop somewhere to stay in a hotel for a day.
  • Keep your vehicle in excellent condition. If your car has brake problems, bald tires or other issues, it can increase the likelihood of a crash.
  • Keep your gas tank at least half full. This is important because if you have to pull over to the side of the road and it's cold, you'll want to run your heater to get you through the harsh temperatures. Also, you don't want to run out of gas in snowy conditions -- as you'll be forced to the side of the road, where you could freeze. You might end up walking in the cold to find gas, which is also dangerous.

These tips will definitely help to keep your family safe, but accidents and injuries can happen in snowy conditions. If your accidents and injuries were caused by another driver's negligence, you might be able to seek financial restitution and justice in court.
