Bruce Jenner involved in fatal California car accident

Bruce Jenner, the 1976 Olympic gold medal decathlete who is even more famous for fathering Kendall and Kylie Jenner and step-fathering the Kardashian clan, was involved in a fatal car accident in California over the weekend.

According to CNN, the four-car accident took place on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu around noon Saturday when a white Lexus rear-ended the driver of a Toyota Prius that had either stopped or slowed down. Jenner, who was driving a black Cadillac Escalade towing an ATV, then rear-ended the Lexus.

The impact from Jenner's vehicle reportedly caused the Lexus to jolt into oncoming traffic, where it was smashed into by a Hummer H2. The driver of the Lexus was killed. There were no other injuries apparent following the crash, but the family in the Hummer was taken to a local hospital as a precaution.

Now police are trying to piece together who was at fault for the accident, which can be difficult to do in a chain-reaction accident like this one.

Jenner did say that paparazzi were following him before the crash, but he said he was not trying to avoid them when the accident took place. Police say they do not believe the paparazzi played a role in the accident.

Police also stated that there is evidence that Jenner applied the brakes and was attempting to stop before striking the Lexus from behind. At this point, it is unknown why the Prius slowed down or stopped, but police said rear-end collisions are common on this scenic stretch of highway.

Jenner's publicist released a statement on Sunday saying that the Olympian offered his "heartfelt and deepest sympathies" to everyone involved in the accident, which he called "a devastating tragedy."

In our next post, we will discuss liability in rear-end and chain-reaction collisions, so stay tuned.
