Super Bowl Sunday known for drunk driving in California
If you are like many people in the Sacramento area, you will be spending Sunday watching the Seattle Seahawks take on the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 49. But if you plan on watching the game at someplace other than your own home, or you venture out after the game, be on the lookout for drunk drivers.
A recent report from the Los Angeles times stated that there was a 77 percent increase in alcohol-related accidents resulting in injury or death on Super Bowl Sunday in the state of California over the past five years.
For that reason, state officials and the Auto Club of Southern California say that drivers face close to double the chances of being hit by a driver on Super Bowl Sunday compared to other Sundays in January and February.
The state insurance commissioner explained that Super Bowl Sunday is one of the worst days of the year for drunk drivers on California’s roads, and we all can play a part in helping to stop it by not letting out friends drive drunk and not driving drunk ourselves.
One of the best ways to prevent yourself or someone else from driving impaired is by arranging a sober ride home ahead of time. It’s also smart to get a ride to your Super Bowl event so that you are not tempted to drive home after you have been drinking.
Drunk driving accidents destroy the lives of countless California families each year, which is why we should all do what we can to prevent these tragedies from occurring. It may also be wise to stay off the roads after the game, if possible, to avoid a potential collision with a drunk driver.
