Study identifies most common causes of head injuries in kids

Parents have to accept that they can't keep their children safe from all injuries; bumps, bruises and scrapes are just a part of growing up. However, new research shows that more serious accidents, such as falls and car accidents, can lead to serious head injuries.

The research, which was gathered by University of California's Davis School of Medicine and published recently in the New England Journal of Medicine, shows that falls accounted for 77 percent of head injuries in children under the age of 2 and 38 percent of head injuries for kids between 2 and 12.

Serious falls can happen when children are not being properly supervised at a daycare, at school or at a friend's house. They can also happen because of dangerous or hazardous conditions on public or private property. In any of these situations, it might be possible for supervisors or property owners to be held liable for injuries that result.

Additionally, the research, which involved more than 43,000 children, indicated that car accidents and bicycle accidents were the cause of many serious brain injuries in older children. The researchers noted that parents should require children to wear bicycle helmets and seatbelts to help prevent these injuries.

However, if the accident is serious enough, not even these precautions can always keep a child safe. Sadly, children are injured every day in California when negligent drivers cause car accidents and bicycle accidents.

After children are seriously injured due to the negligence of another person, parents must stand up for their children by holding the responsible parties accountable for their actions.

Check back tomorrow for more information on holding negligent parties responsible after a child is seriously injured in an accident.
