A 7th-grader dies after being hit by a speeding motorist

A 12-year-old Rancho Cordova girl was struck and killed by a motorist early in the morning on Tuesday, June 13, 2017. The 7th grader was walking across the street en route to Cordova High School to attend summer school when she was struck. She was a 7th grader at W.E. Mitchell Middle School.

Dispatch with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department received a call shortly after 6:45 a.m., reporting that an accident had occurred at the intersection of El Manto Drive and Coloma Road. When they arrived at the crash scene, they found the young girl being tended to by a bystander.

Paramedics arrived on the scene and transported her to an area hospital. She later succumbed to her injuries there.

As for the driver who struck the young girl, the unidentified woman is believed to have been either 18 or 19 years old. She had pulled her Honda Accord over just a short distance down the street from where the accident occurred.

Her car sustained right front end damage to both its windows and front headlight. Witnesses reported seeing other car parts scattered about the sidewalk. Two of the car's tires were also propped up on the curb as well.

Residents who witnessed the accident occur were not all surprised to hear that someone was killed at this intersection. They report that too many people speed up and down Coloma Road as if it's a racetrack on a daily basis.

One witness interviewed even reported having been struck herself at the same intersection some years back. In that instance, the motorist that struck her failed to stop at a red light.

In this case, one woman who heard this Girl fatally struck by vehicle was seventh-grader attending summer school," Alexandra Yoon-Hendricks and Jacob Sweet, June 13, 2017
