The flashing lights of emergency personnel added to the bright lights of the Las Vegas Strip when a woman drove her vehicle through crowds on the sidewalk near the Paris Las Vegas hotel on Dec. 20.. The popular vacation destination for many California residents was turned into a scene of frantically running people and medics tending to the injured.

Authorities have confirmed the death of one pedestrian, and 37 more people required medical attention with seven people suffering critical injuries. Police subsequently arrested the driver after she turned herself in at a nearby hotel.

The motivation for her behavior was initially unknown. A witness reported that the driver gripped the wheel and stared straight ahead. She showed no indication that she was trying to stop the car. Men ran after the car as it continued to strike pedestrians. They yelled for her to stop. Another witness said that people were bouncing off the front of her car. He said that she stopped at the Paris intersection. People punched at her car windows and then she accelerated again and knocked more people down.

Serious injuries often result when a car hits a pedestrian, and a person who has been the victim of such an accident might incur significant medical expenses and lose wages because of an inability to go to work. If the driver was operating the vehicle in a negligent manner, then the victim may want to have the assistance of a personal injury attorney in preparing a lawsuit that would seek compensation from the at-fault motorist for these and other losses that have been sustained.
