How fog and smoke affects road safety

Thick fog and smoke can create many problems for drivers in California. According to a study on fog and smoke-related crashes, traffic accidents that occur in these types of conditions result in more serious injuries than accidents that occur when road visibility is clear. Fog and smoke-related accidents are also more likely to involve multiple vehicles.

Auto recall defects linked with more accidents

California residents may have read media reports about millions of vehicles being recalled due to safety issues such as faulty ignition switches and airbags that can fill cars with flying debris in an accident. A string of fatal crashes around the country led to 64 million trucks, cars and SUVs being recalled, but court records indicate that the number of accidents linked to these issues may be far higher than originally thought.

New pedestrian signal for midblock crosswalks

Pedestrians in California may soon be crossing at midblock crosswalks that have a new mechanism called the HAWK. This is short for the High Intensity Activated CrossWalK, and it is also known as the pedestrian hybrid beacon. It has been shown to reduce pedestrian actions by as much as 69 percent and total motor vehicle crashes by up to 29 percent.

Accident injuries that are often delayed

When California residents are involved in car accidents, they are at risk for suffering serious injuries that could potentially include broken bones and damage to internal organs. However, there are cases where a driver or passenger may walk away from a crash only to begin suffering from accident symptoms later on. This is because some symptoms can take hours, days or even weeks to show up.

Hand injury due to cat bites

As some California pet owners may know, animal bites account for about 2 percent of emergency room visits in U.S. hospitals. While most of the animal bites are from dogs, 10 to 15 percent are cat bites. According to information from the Mayo Clinic, cat bites are serious and hospitalization may be required.

Ride shares may lower motor vehicle accident deaths

As California residents know, drunk driving causes many accidents each year. There are alternatives to driving drunk such as taking a taxi or using a car share service such as Uber that might get more drunk drivers off the road and home safely. A study conducted by Temple University points out car sharing advantages to reduce drunk driving incidents.
