OnStar technology to be used in driving assessments

Excluding the occasional backseat driver, it has probably been a while since you have had your driving skills critiqued. However, if you are an OnStar customer, that might soon change.

The company is set to begin offering a program to customers that would provide a detailed driving assessment at the end of a three-month testing period, Carrier Management reported.

Geared toward customers who want an honest assessment of their driving skills, the program is the first of its kind to test the actual driving behavior of drivers using the OnStar services, which are based on mobile phone voice and data communication.

The customer would be given driving tips at the end of the assessment period and would see how he or she compares to other drivers partaking in the service.

The customer can then choose to share the data with the insurance company Progressive in order to potentially receive discounted insurance offers.

It is expected that the service will roll out sometime this summer in GM automobiles and will be available in all 2016 models, many 2015 models, and some 2013 and 2014 models.

In addition to potentially providing drivers with insurance discounts, it is possible that the assessments could also be used in personal injury claims to demonstrate that the victim of a motor vehicle accident was a good driver.

As advancements are made regarding many types of automobile technology it provides the opportunity for various non-traditional types of evidence to be used in personal injury cases.

That’s why it’s so important to work with a personal injury attorney who is knowledgeable and up to speed with the types of evidence that could help bolster your case.
