Witnesses of bicycle accident help locate suspect

People who witnessed a hit-and-run accident involving a vehicle and an "adult tricycle" in Ramona helped officials locate the driver. The bicycle accident sent a 69-year-old man to the hospital and left police searching for the driver of who fled the scene. A California Highway Patrol officer stated that the victim is well known for riding the cycle around town, and it is believed that he is a stroke survivor. He was reportedly in a state of confusion when police arrived. He was taken to Palomar Medical Center. Witnesses were able to provide authorities with the vehicle's license plate number.

The accident occurred near Main Street and Montecito Road at about 1:05 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 30. As the cyclist was crossing Main Street through a green light, he was stuck by a 2002 Yukon Denali that was turning right. According to witnesses, the man toppled over and the driver exited his vehicle. The driver reportedly apologized to the man, helped him back up, got back in his vehicle and sped away.

Police were able to use witness reports to track the driver down and leave him several messages. A 31-year-old man from Ramona eventually came forward and turned himself in. He is now facing hit and run charges as well as a charge of driving without a license.

Victims of hit-and-run accidents, in addition to dealing with their injuries, have the challenge of working with police to locate the perpetrator. An attorney can provide advice regarding how to deal with any witnesses who may be willing to help police find the person responsible. If the injuries suffered are severe, an attorney can then help build a case against the perpetrator if the victim decides to pursue a lawsuit.
